(Pay1 retailer Kanchan Singh who operates from home)
India has been witnessing a drop in the number of women employed. It is common to see women dropping out of work either post marriage or after giving birth to a child. A new dimension is however showing up – access to higher education. Women today recognize that it pays to be educated and with secondary education now being more within reach than before, many of them prefer to continue with their studies and postpone working.
A recent BBC report provides an interesting insight:
- Between 2004-05 to 2011-12, nearly 20 million Indian women quit work
- Maximum drop out happened in rural areas and in the age group of 15-24 years
When incomes at home stabilize it is often the woman who opts out from working further. The onus of running the house continues with the husband since it is now perceived that his income is stable enough to take care of the family and expenses.
Keeping the above in mind, how can we incentivize women to continue to work?
